About Jazz Mergirl

Jazz Mergirl is the compelling true story of a transgender girl born in a boy’s body. It tells how Jazz Jennings and her family navigated the challenging road to transition her into the bright, beautiful, lovely teen she is today.

Jazz bio pictureIt is also the story of Jazz’s courage and determination in speaking out to the world about being transgender. She urges those who are “less understanding” to become more accepting of “unique and special people,” she encourages kids who are different to accept and love themselves.

Jazz is an activist, author, artist, and TV star. She has received numerous awards and other recognitions. A champion for equal rights, Jazz said, “I am honored to represent the voice of transgender children, many of whom are too afraid to speak on their own.”

Both teens and adults will be fascinated and engaged by Jazz Mergirl.  This book will also be of interest to teachers, those in psychology and gender studies programs, therapists, and people in the healthcare and child protective systems. Included are online resources, an extensive glossary, and a Q & A section, and many B&W illustrations.

About Bruce Edlen

Bruce Edlen bio pictureBruce Edlen, M.A. ed., is the author of Jazz Mergirl, The True Story of Jazz Jennings, a Transgender Girl Born in a Boy’s Body is his first book.  He was a teacher for 20 years. Having worked with students as well as adults provided him with the background and skills necessary to make this story accessible and engaging to both teens and older readers. Even after “retirement” he still thinks of himself as an educator. “Once a teacher, always a teacher.” He continue to keep up on issues in education, and often shares what he has learned with others, both in the teaching world, and with many more people who hold similar interests and concerns. In his spare time, he follow a number of education and political e-zines and newsletters, and enjoys reading a variety of books (mostly nonfiction). He I also listens to an eclectic mix of music, takes photos of his travels, do a bit of gardening, and feed a bunch of feisty backyard hummingbirds. Some of my quiet time is spent at a rustic, hike-in cabin in the mountains.

  1. Thanks Kev, for your wonderful support of this author. It’s truly amazing what this young girl endured in her fight to spread the word about transgender children.

    • Yes, to say she had her challenges would be the understatement of the century, but I do believe the world is slowly changing with acceptance of these very real issues becoming a gradual success. However, there is still such a long way to go.

I have no problem supporting those authors who are brave enough to write about such great feats, and bring to light the issues of this ever developing age of the world as I would any other author.

Thank you for the wonderful comment, Becky.
